We got our quizes back tonight. The two questions I wasn’t sure about, I missed. One I already mentioned in my class 5 entry. The other was about ground effect. Most people missed that one, primarily due to the confusing wording of the answers, though I think most people (myself included) do understand what it is and how it affects takeoff and landing.
The rest of the class was, as the instructor put it, the most boring class in the course. We covered the “important” parts of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, also known as the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). There is a nice thick book of FARs that are relevant to private pilots, but one really only needs to know a small subset of them.
This stuff isn’t really that boring to me, actually. I like reading (mostly because I like knowing) rules. A solid understanding of the rules will help eliminate any doubts in my decision making.
The rules cover many areas of aviation, including maintenance requirements, recency of experience, certification requirements, accident/incident reporting requirements, radio communications, airspace, weather minimums, and much more. If you really want to know, have a look for yourself. Parts 61 and 91 have the most relevant information for me now.
