Tonight was all about navigation. The two most basic methods of VFR navigation that should always be done are pilotage and dead reckoning.
There are many other forms of navigation, the latest and greatest of which is GPS, especially when mixed with a movable map. However, as our instructor told us, many pilots have done stupid things when following their GPS, such as flying into restricted airspace, flying over TFRs, and flying into the side of mountains.
The C152s at the club aren’t equiped with GPS, but they do have VOR receivers. VOR navigation is still widely used and has already been a part of my flight training. The other methods of navigation we talked about are mostly based on some use of radio signals, but GPS seems to be taking over the world.
